Water has always been Andy Miyares’ natural element.
He’s been swimming since he was 9 months old and, as a baby, used to dump water over his head for laughs. Since then, he’s been in the pool training almost every day – and he loves it.
Andy joined Special Olympics Florida when he was 6. Two years later, he competed in his first State Games.
“Just like that, an unbelievable dream life began for this family,” said his mother, Ana Maria. “And that is what it continues to be.”
Being a Special Olympics Florida athlete has allowed Andy to travel the world. He’s been to Morocco, Greece, Italy, and China. He was invited to the White House, met President Clinton, and danced with the Shriver family. He’s swum with Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps and competed in the 2015 World Games.
Special Olympics Florida, says his mom, has given Andy opportunities she could not have imagined.
“When I first held Andy, I never dreamed our life would be what it is,” Ana Maria said. “What else can we ask for? Nothing.”
